commercial Patterns

In soft material the whole class is making bucket hats. It's definitely a tough process but I will get there in the end. In this point in time I am up to sowing my crown of the hat and the brim.

here is a photo of my progress.

here is a photo of my lining/inside of the hat.

The Holocaust

  1. Why was Germany hit the hardest during the depression?

In 1929 the Wall Street Crash led to a worldwide depression. Germany suffered more than any other nation as a result of the recall of US loans, which caused its economy to collapse. Unemployment rocketed, poverty soared and Germans become desperate.

One huge consequence of this situation was a huge rise in unemployment and by the time Hitler became chancellor in January 1933 one in three Germans were unemployed. With this figure hitting 6.1 million industrial productions had also more then halved over the same period

  1. Explain what Germany had to agree to by signing the Treaty of Versailles?

Some of the things that Germany had to agree on with the Versailles treaty were for Germany to require disarm, make territorial concessions to Belgium,Czechoslovakiaand Poland, pay reparations to the many countries that had formed the entente powers, return Alsace and Lorraine to France and cede all its overseas colonies in China, Pasific and Africa to the allied nations.

  1. How was NZ affected by the depression?

There were many countries that ere affected in this tragedy and new Zealand was one of them.

In New Zealand the crash was not immediately apparent but the 1930 export prices had begun to plummet. It had started falling to 45% by 1933. In the end of 1930 the urban businesses had manufacturers and were feeling the flow-on effects.

The great depression.

1933: Hitler appointed Chancellor burning of the Reichstag first anti-Jewish measures first concentration camp opened at Dachau  indefinite imprisonment becomes law.

1934: President Hindenburg dies in office and Hitler combines the roles of  Chancellor and President, becoming Commander-in-Chief of Germany

November 35th Nuremberg laws enacted, defining Jews biologically,  and sanctioning the final social and legal separation of Jews and non-Jews

1937: concentration camp at

Buchenwald opens; major anti-Semitic exhibition in Berlin

1938: Anschluss (Germany annexes Austria) Italy joins Germany in passing sweeping anti-Jewish measures known as ‘Racial Laws’

Prezi data on the ecosystem

  1. Is commercial fishing threatening the ecosystem?

  2. What is by-catch?

  3. What is a ‘Dolphin safe label’?

  4. Are there any sustainable ways of fishing if so what are they?

  1. Yes commercial fishing is threatening the ecosystem in many ways such as…

  • Stopping fish from being able to reproduce

  • Less fish are in the ocean which can affect the food chain and many other things

  • Some fish start to over populate because we keep fishing certain fish that eat certain fish

Average amount of fishing has mostly been illegal internationally, including protected fish and masse’s of those protected fish end up on our plates. Former workers in the past have reported that entire teams were enslaved and forced to work without wages.these workers sometimes get Abusive beatings and are forced to work until exhaustion are commonplace on certain ships. Certain workers in these situations are getting less sleep than needed and a lot of them are still children. Addition to all these things (illegal fishing) causes extreme damage to the ocean because environmental regulations are typically not followed.

  1. Bycatch is where the unwanted sea animals have been caught and just left to die such as…

  • Dolphins tuna fishing is estimated to have killed nearly 600,000 dolphins.

  • Sea turtles

  • Protected fish

  • Sharks

  • Whales

  • Sea birds

  • Cetaceans

  • Seals

  • Sealions

Around 720,000 sea birds, 300,000, 345,000 seals and sealions and over 250,000 sea turtles die because of being caught in fishing gear like nets, hooks, fishing line and many other fisheries around the world annually.

  1. The dolphin safe label was made to “protect the dolphins” even though it was a big fail. It was in compliance with the U.S laws and regulations of tuna fishing operations.

  1. Yes there are ways of sustainable fishing for example in the Philippines of the Tagbauna people they sometimes use spears to fish (example down below)

Some people use a spear gun which in my opinion is less work in order to shoot at the fish that you are planning on catching.

Some other places go fishing for a certain fish each season of the year which means fish don’t overpopulate, go endangered or go extinct.

Merchant of Venice

For the past few weeks my english class has been working on video making for each group. My group movie was based on The Merchant of Venice. Our short film is all about a heist at the bank and how someone ratted them out to the police but they paid the judge to say they were not guilty so in court they were charged not guilty. Some challenges we all had to face was when some people that needed to be in the shot weren't at school to do it so we had to think outside the box and find a way to still film with one less person to act in the scene even if it was the main character in the shot. We connected this movie to The Merchant of Venice by using elements like betrayal, a court scene and the "villain" getting karma for doing the main cast "wrong". After doing using all the film techniques were had to pick two of our own to put in the film, so we chose to do the High angle and Over the shoulder. If I were to do this activity again and I could do something different I would do everything differently.

Little things matter

Once upon a time there was a wise man

who used to go to the ocean

to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking

on the beach

before he began his work.

One day he was walking along

the shore.

As he looked down the beach,

he saw a human

figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think

of someone who would

dance to the day.

So he began to walk faster

to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw

that it was a young man

and the young man wasn't dancing,

but instead he was reaching

down to the shore,

picking up something

and very gently throwing it

into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,

"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,

looked up and replied,

"Throwing starfish in the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked,

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out.

And if I don't throw them in they'll die."

"But, young man, don't you realize that

there are miles and miles of beach

and starfish all along it.

You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

and threw it into the sea,

past the breaking waves and said-

"It made a difference for that one."

What is the main message in this poem?

The message in this poem is that even the small things matter. Small things like saving a small starfish on the beach and throwing it in the ocean can still change a little bit of the starfish population and doing so means that more starfish can be created and the starfish population grows more every day.

The more starfish that die the less starfish are on this earth so every starfish you save means more and more are created.

Show Don't Tell

Today we are doing "show don’t tell” to write 3-5 effective narrative openings. I will be reflecting on 3 photos that I'm going to "show not tell you". This has to do what image has given, I hope you enjoy it. Here's what I wrote.

1.  As I was sitting down on the step while it was frosty, a man walked past me and gave me this side view that didn't surprise me.

2. Is anyone around me? I need to take this luscious meat home tonight for my kids.

3. It was just a common day for me as I felt the feeling of boredom once again.
