Different White Powders And Making Sherbet

Aim: To learn about the makeup of different white powders.

There are  a number of different white powders in our everyday life. Some of these are harmful and others are not. Test the four white powders listed to see which one has been found at the airport.

Here are some examples of everyday kitchen white powders.

Flour

Cornflour

Sugar

Salt

Baking Soda

Baking Powder

Icing Sugar

Tartaric Acid

Citric Acid

Gluten Free flour

Materials

1.  Sugar
2.  Salt
3.  Baking Soda
4.  Cornflour
5.  Pipette 
6.   Vinegar

On the black cardboard using a microscope you need to record what you see. You will be given a small amount of 4 white powders on your cardboard. Look at them under your microscope and record what you see. 
Do not mix the powders or taste the powders.

Making Sherbet

Using the following recipe you need to make sherbet.

Sherbet recipe

Recipe: 

1tsp of powdered drink crystals (eg refresh)
1/4 tsp citric acid
1/4 tsp tartaric acid
1/4 tsp -baking soda.
Put all ingredients into a zip lock bag, stir, and enjoy.

Findings:

Sherbet
Taste	fizzy and foamy. A little sour but mainly sweet.
Colour	pink and white.

Conclusion

C.I.P Plum Pie

Today we went over to the school garden and picked plums. 

We also Picked up rubbish to make the school cleaner and more healthy.

What I would like to do with the plums is make a plum pie.

Now I have a craving for plum pie ugh!!!

Here is the recipe of plum pie if you would like to make plum pie.

1. In a large bowl, sprinkle plums with lemon juice. Combine the sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon. ...
2. For topping, in a small bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling.
3. Bake at 375° for 50-60 minutes or until filling is bubbly.

What I like about plums is that they are juicy and sweet but not to sweet at the same time.

but what I don't like about plums is that they stain clothes very easy.

Crazy Crystals

Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals

Definition of solution: 

The meaning of solution is fixing a problem by solving it or dealing with a difficult situation.

Definition of saturated: 

The meaning of saturated is when something can't hold anymore liquid for example when it is raining and your very wet and water starts dripping that's because your clothes can't hold anymore water. 

Borax Crystals

Materials

1) 1/2 cup of hot water

2) 2 teaspoons of borax

3) 1 peg

4) 3 pipe cleaners

Process

Step 1: Put 1/2 cup of hot water in your cup 

Step 2: put 2 teaspoons of borax in your cup but not at once ( mix your 1st teaspoon of borax softly until it is saturated then put the 2nd teaspoon of borax in the cup and make sure that it is all saturated.)

Step 3: get 1 peg (any type of peg.)

Step 4: get 3 pipe cleaners (small pipe cleaners.)

Step 5: make a star with your 3 pipe cleaners.

Step 6: dip your star in the cup and leave it for about 2 days.

Sugar Crystals

Materials

1) 8 Teaspoons Of Sugar 

2) 1/2 Cup Of Hot Water 

3) 1 Brown Pipe Cleaner

4) 1 Peg 

5) 1 Spoon 

6) 1 cup

Process

Step 1:Get 2 Teaspoons Of Sugar And Add It To A Cup 

Step 2: Add 1/2 Cup Of Hot Water To The Cup With The Sugar 

Step 3: Mix The Sugar And and hot water until it has dissolved 

Step 4: Get 1 Pipe Cleaner And A Peg And Put The Pipe Cleaner In The Peg 

Step 5: Put The Pipe Cleaner In The Water With Sugar

Step 6: Leave For 2 Days

Step 7: You Now Have Sugar Crystals

Salt Crystals

Materials

1) 2 Teaspoons Of Salt

2) 1 Pipe Cleaner

3) 1 Peg

4) Hot Water

5) 1 Spoon

6) 1/2 Cup

Process

Step 1: Get 2 Teaspoons Of Salt And Put It In A Cup

Step 2: Add Hot Water it the cup with the salt in it

Step 3: Mix The Water And Salt Until It Has Dissolved

Step 4:  Put The Pipe Cleaner In A Peg

Step 5: Put The Pipe Cleaner And Peg In The Cup

Step 6: Leave For 2 Days

Step 7: You Now Have Salt Crystals

What crystals worked out best and why?: 

The best one out of all of them was the borax because we put enough borax in the water but with the others we didn't put much.

Today in Period 1 we went out side and picked up rubbish it was disgusting but it was for the best.

What I really liked about today was cleaning up the school and enjoying the fresh air and hanging out with my friend Mattisin.
I did get a few scratches from the trees and sticks but i'm alright.

Dirty Water To Clear Water Experiment

Today in Science we are making clear water.

But the way we are doing it is with...

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through which only the liquid can pass.

Cut the bottle

Put the top half of the bottle upside down

Add layers of Coffee , Sand , Soil , & Rocks

Then fill a cup with dirty water

Step 5. 

Then put the dirty water in the Bottle/funnel

Art-Stop - Motion

For the past few days 7/8WH and 7/8AL have been doing art. No it's not this type of art.


This is the type of art we are doing.



We are doing.....







We started doing this on the 4th of February and it has already got me existed on what all our Stop Motion videos look like.
We all had to be in groups of either 2 or 3 and I chose 3.
I am currently in a group with the amazing Libby & Nici and I think I work pretty good with them.
What my group and I are doing for our Stop Motion video is how we all met but we aren't going to use toys of a white board we are going to use clay.
with each scene you have to move the clay and change the shape of it just a little bit and each scene after you move the clay you take a picture.
I can't wait for my groups and my video to be done and  I can't wait to show you guys.

Waitangi Day

As you already know we have just had a public holiday for Waitangi Day.

In this blog post I will be telling you some facts about it.

Every year on the 6th of February New Zealand celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi which was first celebrated in 1840. New Zealanders celebrate this day in many different ways. 

With some people it is just a day off work and a chance to enjoy the warm summer weather. However for others it is a chance to reflect on a significant day in New Zealand's history.

At times Waitangi Day has included Protests and Conflict.

The treaty house grounds were made a public reserve which was dedicated on 6th of February 1934.

This event is considered to be the first Waitangi Day. Up to 10,000 Maori attended the 1934 celebrations.
